Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) approved the final version of the reform of the General Food Law (GFL) on 17 April 2019 with 603 votes in favour, 17 against and 27 abstentions. The reform will take effect in 2021, and will mean that the public and independent scientists will have access to safety studies provided by industry. Together, we sent thousands of tweets and 42873 emails to MEPs, to ensure the reform was in the interest of people and not industry. I am writing as your constituent, urging you to vote for strong rules to end the secrecy around industry studies used to back up claims that pesticides, GMOs, food contact materials and other products related to our food are safe.

You and your colleagues' votes in the European Parliament will determine whether citizens can trust Europe's food safety regime in future. The debate about glyphosate has shown that a favourable opinion from the EU's food safety authority, EFSA, is insufficient to reassure citizens, so long as EFSA's opinion is based on secret industry studies.

More than a million European citizens like myself have called on the European Commission to ensure that all studies used to back up regulatory approval of pesticides are published (http://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/public/documents/3496/DS_Annex.pdf). We don't think it is right that the scientific assessment of potential impacts of pesticides and other products should be a private affair between EU scientists and the manufacturers, preventing any meaningful scrutiny by other scientists.

Specifically, I call on you to ensure that existing rights of citizens to access information upon request are not undermined, that all safety-relevant information is published, and that the possible reasons for confidential treatment are clearly limited. In addition, studies should be published as soon as submitted to allow for meaningful consultation during the evaluation process.

This vote in the European Parliament's Environment Committee is one more step to changing the status quo on how potentially-dangerous chemicals are approved in the EU. Together, we are all part of that change.
