We call on you to monitor the evolving situation, urgently send independent observers to the area concerned, and use all means necessary to exert pressure on the Polish government to immediately send medical and humanitarian aid to the Polish-Belarusian border and allow people to apply for asylum.

Why is this important?

“Children are getting weaker and weaker. Toddlers nibble on wood twigs to suck out the juices that are inside them. Chewing twigs also allows you to cheat [....] hunger”, says activist Joanna Aisha Iwińska helping people on the Polish-Belarusian border. [1]

Thousands of people, including women and children, are stuck there right now.

They are stranded between 12,000 armed Polish soldiers using tear gas against them and Belarusian officers pushing them towards Poland. [2]

Many of them have been here for days, without food, fresh water or medical assistance. [3] No one is allowed near them, not doctors, nor anyone offering food or shelter and safety from harm. Activists on the border are trying to help face the threats and attacks. [4]

And as our leaders sit back and let this humanitarian crisis unfold, there is one thing that could make them stand up for what’s right -- a massive public outcry from across the continent.

All eyes are on this situation right now. Every single media outlet is talking about this. And if we are silent, EU leaders will think no one cares. But this community doesn’t stay silent. Together we can show them what a public outcry in the name of humanity looks like.
