Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany

We call on the European Union to make the COVID-19 vaccines and treatments accessible to everyone, everywhere. The EU should:

  • Release all patents and licences of the anti-pandemic vaccines and treatments;
  • Make public all contracts between public EU authorities and pharmaceutical companies;
  • Ensure that vaccines and treatments are affordable and accessible for all.

Why is this important?

We need to waive intellectual property rights on Covid-19 vaccines to speed up production in the rest of the world.

Following the United States’s call to remove barriers to the open production of Covid-19 vaccines, we have a chance to hasten the end of this pandemic. Experts say that access to vaccination programmes has so far been saving lives. [1]

The lack of vaccine access in countries like India is accelerating the loss of life and human suffering. As cases spiral out of control, open production can help ensure sufficient access to a vaccine and bring an end within sight. With new variants of the virus developing the longer it circulates, a slow roll out is only making matters worse. That means that nobody is safe from Covid-19 until everyone is safe.

Here are some bullet points to use for inspiration but the best is to write your own comment in your own words to have maximum impact:

  1. In less than 24hrs, the US, France, Spain and Italy have supported the waiver on #COVID19 vaccines. Chancellor Merkel, why is Germany not joining them?
  2. Chancellor Merkel, you have the chance to be on the right side of history. As Biden is backing the waiver on #COVID19 vaccines, you must follow and together deliver safe and effective #PeoplesVaccine.
  3. The US supports lifting patents on #COVID19 vaccines. Chancellor Merkel do the same and together to deliver a safe and effective #PeoplesVaccine to the world.
  4. To beat covid, the technology for all vaccines and treatments must be made freely available. The support of the US, France, Spain, Italy to the waiver for #PeoplesVaccines is the first step. Now the ball is in your court!
  5. I want the EU to act decisively to boost production and access to COVID-19 vaccines and treatments in the long term... Please support a TRIPS Waiver on COVID-19 Intellectual Property.
  6. I’m backing the move to lift patents on Covid-19 vaccines, Chancellor Merkel will you do the same and urgently deliver safe and effective #PeoplesVaccine to the world?
  7. They'll tell us that opening production access won't be enough. That transferring knowledge takes too much time to scale. But know the truth. This pandemic isn’t going anywhere fast and acting together is our best chance of long-term success. Will you help us scale up the fight against covid with a #PeoplesVaccine
