The European response to fund the coronavirus recovery should be paid by the most profitable corporations and the wealthiest people, and by an effective fight against corporate tax avoidance and harmful tax practices.

Why is this important?

The world’s richest people have banded together to tell governments they want to pay more tax [1]. They know that raising taxes for the wealthy is an essential part of recovering from the coronavirus crisis.

Their timing couldn’t be better in Europe. European leaders are ramping up discussions on the plans for the coronavirus recovery package. We have just a few days to convince them that taxing the richest people and corporations should be part of the plan.

Politicians don’t always like raising taxes, especially for big business and the wealthy. It’s vital they understand that European citizens know that - for once - the millionaires are right: raising taxes has to be part of the corona recovery. Then our leaders will understand they have public support to go ahead and do the right thing.

There are already leaders in Europe who agree. Charles Michel, the European Council President said he agrees a tax on tech giants such as Facebook or Google - and big bankers to fund the recovery. [2] If he can get backing from France, Germany and other EU countries. But he needs to prove he has public support to get his way.

The world is slowly but surely going crazy because we are splitting the population of each country in a group of relatively or excessively wealthy persons that can give access to good education to their children and a group of less wealthy people whose children will never be able to get out of the dark pit that finance has created for them. Using this excess of money for more useful uses than speculation, buying private jets or other profoundly futile tragets seems the righ thing to do (although it's not easy to do well).

Taxing persons who possess an inordinate amount of the world's wealth/ money, so as to let it circulate freely, is one of the few ways that the "rest" can interact economicaly to have a meaningful life and also to play a part in helping to keep the wheels of the economic system functioning.

Wealth inequality, which has been significantly helped by massive tax breaks for the rich, is one of the greatest threats to society. The tax breaks have to end, the rich must pay their fair share.
