The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) stated the planned hydro power plant in Nenskra, Georgia is does not comply with their standards. The project does not meet the banks’ requirements in the areas of human rights and environmental protection. Both banks will not hand out loans until those requirements are met. More than 96,000 of us signed the petition, our partner Bankwatch CEE handed the petition over to the two banks and together we put a hold on a hydro power plant threatening biodiversity and the livelihoods of villagers in the region. We call on you not to sign the loan contract for the Nenskra hydropower project. The project threatens biodiversity and livelihood of villagers. It doesn’t comply with national legislation, transparent consultations were not held, and a proper cost/benefit analysis for Georgia and impacted communities is missing.

Why is this important?

Hydropower can be a great renewable energy solution under the right circumstances. In Georgia however, they are about to use European money to bankroll a completely disastrous project. But the final contracts haven’t been signed yet so there’s still time to stop it in its tracks.

The Nenskra hydro plant is to be built in a precious valley, destroying the pristine environment, threatening the livelihood of local villagers, and in the end, the energy it will create will be too expensive! [1]

Two European banks approved loans for one-third of the one billion dollars needed but before they sign the contracts they'll meet in Luxemburg next week. [2] They will hold a big public meeting where together with partners we will show up and raise our concerns. Last year we were very lucky to visit Georgia for the first time, a very beautiful iconic country with an immense wealth of culture. It is not a wealthy country in economic terms. We saw a part of the area that is this project would flood. An area of huge natural beauty. It is not hard to see why a dam is being planned for this area - there is a river with immense power. So tempting to devise a prestigious engineering project to harness that power. But this is a top-down project that has not given due calculation to the immense harm that will be done to the local population. There is also a calculation that needs to be done that considers the local environmental costs of the attempt to harness this river. As well as the on-going environmental consequences.
